Group Class Series
Group Sessions are Currently Not Offered Due to My Midwifery Apprenticeship
The class series is eight weeks and is limited to six couples.
Cost of the series is $295.00 which includes a $50.00 non-refundable deposit.
Each student is encouraged to bring a member from their birth team. All registered students are guaranteed a journal, Student Binder, and a Breastfeeding Class free of charge.

Class Schedule & Objectives
Class One: Nutrition and Exercise:
This class focuses on the importance of a good balanced diet and stamina building exercises to strengthen and tone the pregnant mother. How to choose good food choices, ensure daily intake of protein, and portion sizes are discussed.
Class Two: Philosophies in Birth
Class Two looks deeper into the current birthing models in our community and how they compare to nationwide and worldwide statistics and practices. The Technocratic and Holistic Models of Birth are compared so that the class may gain a better understanding of the realities that exist today. We begin to question what we expect and want for our birth.
Class Three: Normal, Physiological Birth
The three stages of labor are discussed in this class. Students will learn what the birthing process is for the mother and the baby. Also discussed are the normal and averages of labor, how labor is assessed, and what mothers need to do during each labor stage.
Class Four: Planning Your Birth
The major teaching points in this class are informed consent and the most common procedures/interventions/drugs used for labor in Hampton Roads. Students will learn what labor induction is, why it may be needed, how to avoid unnecessary induction and what the hazards are for mothers and babies. The class will also begin to write a birth plan keeping in mind realistic expectations.
Class Five: Mental & Emotional Qualities of Birth
In this class, students will begin to explore the mental and emotional components of birth. How does our thinking, acting, and past/present emotions affect the way we are born as mothers and the way we birth our children. Strategies are discussed on how to improve our mental and emotional states, especially prior to labor and birth.
Class Six: Support of Laboring Women
So, what does a laboring woman need? This class topic will discover what a laboring woman needs most, what positions progress labor and facilitate birth, what roles do you see your birth team having, and how to create a sacred birthing environment.
Class Seven: Newborns & Breastfeeding
Common newborn procedures are defined and discussed in regards to informed consent, e.g. circumcision, Vitamin K, and cord clamping. Breastfeeding how-tos and common problems are discussed as well.
Class Eight: Postpartum & Beyond
Moms will learn how to take care of their bodies and minds during the postpartum period. Tips for a successful lying-in period are explored. Ways to start a safe postpartum exercise regime and nutritional tips are also discussed. Parenting styles and happy family tips are exchanged among students.
